Women in Engineering Day 2021

According to Women’s Engineering Society, just 13 per cent of those working in construction are women but, of that small percentage, there are many amazing women.

As part of Women in Engineering Day, we want to break down the dated stereotypes and gender norms dissuading girls from choosing the STEM subjects that can lead to a fulfilling career in the sector. These stereotypes limit aspirations, preventing young women from reaching their potential.

Our social value team will be delivering a presentation to Eden Girls School in Waltham Forest, to three-year groups on historic women in STEM on a career in engineering, the opportunities and the varied roles in the property services industry. In 2019, just 37 per cent of girls entered at least one STEM topic at A level, compared to 51 per cent of boys.

Throughout the year our social value team who are also STEM ambassadors, run a series of programmes to encourage more females into the industry including attendance at career fairs and school visits. We also work in partnership with the Construction Youth Trust and support their school engagement programmes, which highlight all the varied roles in our industry including championing engineering positions. Also, our virtual work experience target at students who wouldn’t look at a career in engineering or quantity surveying, with over half of applicants for our pilot programme were female.

We want to raise awareness about the opportunities available to women in the sector, and support women already employed in trades roles. This year we are profiling the brightest women across the business who share their views on their role, the myths and how we can encourage more females to take up this career path.

To read about the women making a difference at Morgan Sindall Property Services, look at our blog section and hear from our quantity surveyors, engineers and site managers who share their experiences and how we can encourage more women into these roles.
