Building a Successful Career: Debbie Howick’s Journey as a Site Manager

It’s National Careers Week and to celebrate we’re shining a light on inspiring career journeys within Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS). Debbie Howick is one of our site managers in our Retrofit team and shares her career journey, one of growth and passion for creating energy-efficient homes.
Debbie started her career in June 2015 as a Trainee Site Manager. Over the years, she worked her way up, gaining valuable experience in Decent Homes programmes and fire risk assessment (FRA) works. By September 2023, she was a fully-fledged site manager, overseeing critical projects that enhanced the quality and safety of homes.
When the opportunity arose to transition into Retrofit, Debbie jumped at the chance. She joined MSPS as a site manager in the Retrofit team, eager to take on the challenge of making homes more energy efficient. With government targets pushing for properties to reach an EPC C rating, she knew this was a role where she could make a real impact.
Debbie’s role in retrofit projects is all about delivering energy-efficient improvements to homes. Once the Retrofit Assessor and client agree on the necessary measures, Debbie ensures everything runs smoothly, from resident communication and programming works to on-site management and health & safety oversight. She also carries out site inspections to guarantee high-quality standards before officially lodging the property as compliant.
Her background in Decent Homes programmes has given her hands-on experience with a variety of works, including:
- New roofs and external repairs
- Kitchen and bathroom replacements
- Window and door installations
- Fire safety improvements
- Insulation and energy efficiency upgrades
Now, in her new role, she’s focused on helping residents save energy, reduce costs, and live in warmer, more sustainable homes.
Like many entering the industry, Debbie faced challenges. Starting with little knowledge in a fast-paced operational role was daunting, but she had a supportive manager who encouraged her to learn from operatives on-site. This hands-on approach gave her a strong foundation in construction processes.
As a woman in the industry, she also encountered situations where she had to prove herself, but with determination and confidence and by setting expectations, over time, she built a reputation based on knowledge, professionalism, and leadership.
In the Retrofit team, Debbie’s goal is to strengthen relationships with clients, subcontractors, and site teams while continuously expanding her knowledge and skills. She’s excited to be part of a team that’s making sustainable housing a reality, ensuring homes meet modern energy standards.
For any woman considering a career in retrofit or construction, Debbie said: “Go for it! The industry is far more diverse than it was years ago, and all genders are welcomed into all roles. Yes, challenges exist but overcoming them only makes you stronger.”
She’s seen a rise in women across trade, operational, and commercial roles, and she hopes this trend continues.
Debbie credits her team for helping her transition into retrofit. They’ve provided:
- Patience and guidance as she learned the full retrofit process
- Training opportunities to understand not just her role, but how all roles connect in the bigger picture
- A platform to apply her previous experience while developing new skills
Debbie’s journey is a testament to the fact that learning never stops and that with the right support, determination, and passion, a career in retrofit can be both rewarding and impactful.
