Learning on the Job: Apprentices Build Confidence and Skills in Basildon

Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS) is proud to be supporting the development of apprentices through its work on the Basildon Borough Council contract, helping to build skills, confidence and future careers.
MSPS currently has five multitrade apprentices on the contract, with three in their second year and two in their first year. The programme has been designed to make sure apprentices are working towards a multiskilled qualification, giving them exposure to a wide range of trades.
As part of their training, apprentices have been developing skills across plumbing, carpentry, plastering, tiling and decorating. Crucially, this learning is taking place in real working environments, allowing them to put their training into practice straight away and build confidence at pace.
The training has been led by Repairs Supervisor Colin Taylor who has provided apprentices with the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned in real time and under realistic site conditions. The standard of work delivered was impressive, particularly given how early the apprentices are in their careers, with many showing strong technical ability and confidence while working with minimal supervision.
The programme is a great example of how MSPS supports local communities through the Basildon Borough Council contract, by investing in young people and equipping them with practical, transferable skills. These are skills the apprentices will carry with them throughout their careers, helping to maintain and improve local homes and deliver real benefits for residents.
Reflecting on the programme, Repairs Supervisor Colin Taylor said: “Leading this training has been a positive experience. Giving the apprentices a real site to work on meant they could properly apply what they’ve been learning, make decisions for themselves and take pride in their work. They’ve all made excellent progress and shown real commitment. Seeing their confidence and skills grow has been incredibly rewarding.”
Reflecting on the experience, one of the apprentices, Alfie Johnson said: “The training is helping me to build confidence and understand how different trades come together on site. I’ve gained experience in areas like tiling, plumbing, stud work and fitting doors, and being able to practise these skills in a live environment has really helped me improve and feel more prepared for the job.”
