Last week, Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS) joined forces with Basildon Borough Council for a Community Safety Day at the Basildon Town Centre, part of the council’s wider focus on tackling serious violence, crime and anti-social behaviour.

This follows the first ever Community Safety Summit, hosted by the Leader of Basildon Borough Council, Cllr Gavin Callaghan, and attended by Chief Executive Gary Jones, Essex Police and security experts. The summit underlined the council’s commitment to addressing issues that matter most to residents across the borough.

The event brought together a wide range of local organisations including Essex Police, Essex Fire & Rescue, the NHS, and several community groups, all with a shared commitment to supporting residents and improving community safety.

For MSPS, it was an opportunity to highlight the important work we are delivering in partnership with Basildon Borough Council to keep homes and neighbourhoods safe. Through this partnership, we are introducing a series of initiatives designed to reduce risks, improve security, and give residents peace of mind. These include:

  • Repairing door entry systems and replacing main entrance door handles with anti-ligature handles to prevent unauthorised access.
  • Replacing doors that are beyond repair with modern, high-security doors.
  • Phasing out drop key boxes and introducing the more secure golden key system.
  • Applying Designing Out Crime principles-making practical changes to shared spaces that help prevent or deter crime before it happens.

Alongside these measures, our team used the event to take reports from residents about unsafe areas, damaged doors, and issues linked to anti-social behaviour. These reports will be shared with Basildon Council for inspection, with follow-up works raised where needed.

Lukasz Borkowski, Senior Partnership Manager at Morgan Sindall Property Services, said: “Community safety is not just about fixing issues when they arise but it’s about working together with residents and partners to create secure, welcoming neighbourhoods. Events like this give us the chance to listen directly to the community, explain the steps we’re taking, and build trust through action. We’re proud to be working alongside Basildon Council to make sure residents feel safe in their homes and communities.”

Christine Lyons, Basildon Borough Council’s Executive Director for Growth & Partnerships, added: “It was quite a welcome sight to see hundreds of residents engage on the day and have their questions answered. The Council and its partners will continue to work together to make sure are communities are safer.”

The Community Safety Day event was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the positive impact that partnership working can achieve. For MSPS, it reaffirmed our ongoing commitment to ensuring that Basildon residents live in homes that are safe, secure, and well maintained.

Together with Basildon Borough Council and local partners, we will continue to deliver essential improvements and strengthen security measures, all with the shared goal of creating a safer borough for the community.
