Helping To Protect Our Biodiversity
Our Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS) Social Value team have been continuing their work on our biodiversity programmes, which aim to teach children more about wildlife.
These programmes are very important for our communities as they help to make the environment in which people live a better and healthier place for all.
Helen Sheen, Head of CSR at MSPS: “These biodiversity projects have a positive impact in the local areas we operate in. They’re a fun way we can gradually educate the next generation from a young age about how they can care for their environment and important wildlife such as hedgehogs. As a business we take pride in the communities we operate in and that includes protecting wildlife. These hedgehog houses are just one part of our overall biodiversity programme, which plays a key role in protecting and preserving our environment for the next generation.”
Hedgehog houses for St Albans school
We provided hedgehog houses and wildlife cameras to Garden Fields JMI School in St Albans. The school is currently running a project with year 2 students on animals and their habitats, and the hope is that the hedgehog houses, which have been placed in the school’s nature reserve, will attract more wildlife to the area. We may also get some interesting night-time footage from the wildlife cameras which were set up.
Head of CSR Helen Sheen was there volunteering on the day along with Martin Maylin from Hornbeam Wood Hedgehog Sanctuary, who gave a talk to the students. Pupils learned how hedgehogs are now an endangered species and what they can do to help.
The school is also running a competition around hedgehogs, and MSPS will be providing prizes of more hedgehog houses – this time so that the students can place them in their own gardens to support the animals.
Bug hotels for Hammersmith and Fulham children’s centre
We worked with the Masbro Children’s Centre in Hammersmith and Fulham, as part of its Fit and Fed summer sessions. The centre offers access to a range of services including family support, health and education for parents of children under five.
The sessions ran over a number of weeks, giving children the opportunity to design and then build bug hotels in the centre’s garden, and design, build and decorate tyre planters. The paint and recycled tyres used for the planters were donated to us for this project by our subcontractors at Elephant & Castle and Waltham Forest. We also donated a bench to the centre.
