Residents of St Gabriels Court sheltered scheme in Pitsea, are enjoying a new outdoor area and increased accessibility thanks to a refurbishment project delivered by the Morgan Sindall Property Services (MSPS) planned works team.

The refurbishment of St Gabriels Court, which comprises of over 40 homes and 60 residents, will significantly enhance the living conditions of those living in the scheme.

The project involved a number of significant adaptations, including a transformation of the outside communal area. Previously, the pathways had been too narrow making it difficult for residents in wheelchairs to access it, but widened pathways has created more accessibility and comfort for residents. Other adaptions include two new patio areas for residents to gather and socalise, new front doors, creating warmer comfortable homes, roof renewals and a new laundry and drying area.

Residents were involved in every stage of the refurbishment, with Tea and Talks sessions held with residents before the works started and then on a weekly basis to keep them up to date on the progress. It was during these talks that the idea for vegetable planters for the communal garden came about so that residents could continue to grow their own vegetables. This collaborative effort has not only upgraded the scheme, but also fostered a positive and supportive environment, reinforcing the sense of community among the residents.

Councillor Kerry Smith, Basildon Councils Cabinet Member for Housing and Property said: “The refurbishment of St Gabriels Court is part of our commitment to enhance the living standards of our residents. The new outdoor area and improved accessibility are not just physical upgrades, but also significant boosts to the well-being of the residents and will make a huge difference to them. I am particularly proud of the collaborative approach taken, involving residents at every stage, which has truly made this project a success.”

Joanne Clements, Sheltered Housing Manager said: “Residents are very happy with the new porches and roofs on the scheme, alongside the upgrades to the outdoor space which everyone can enjoy and use to socialise.”

Mark Whittam, Regional Director, Morgan Sindall Property Services said: “We are delighted to partner with Basildon Borough Council on this project, to provide residents with warmer, comfortable homes to live in. The feedback we have received about the refurbishment has been hugely positive and I thank the residents of St Gabriel’s for their patience and cooperation during the works.”

To mark the completion of the project MSPS held an event including a lunch and raffle prizes for residents.

The renovations to the scheme were carried out as part of Basildon Borough Council’s repairs and maintenance programme on council homes.
